<blockquote cite="http://www.talash.net/blog/importance-of-project-manager-while-outsourcing/81/">Annual Cost of In-House Designer: $25, 0000 (Average low salary in US as per Salary.com)</blockquote>

$250K for a designer? No kidding! I know you meant $25K. :) Do edit when possible so that it does not raise eyebrows. :)

Good points about project management and the unrealistic expectations around offshoring. But I would dispute the actual numbers of how much a company saves in sending work offshore. On the surface, the numbers look great -- superficial savings of 30-70% aren't unrealistic. The savings start to erode when project management is either ill-equipped or unprepared to deal with such issues as: cross-cultural differences in working style (reluctance of non-US offshore staff to be pro-active in solving issues), time differences that aren't planned for (including overseas holidays), weather conditions (such as the 2005 flooding in Bangalore) that prevent work from getting done, etc., etc., etc. Failing to face up to these issues can be costly, in terms of time and money and morale. And let's not forget the hidden costs of Stateside programmers "cleaning up" after their offshore colleagues -- those numbers never show up on a project plan, and indeed, they never should! Poor planning and poorer execution -- not the inherent qualities of offshoring alone -- are often to blame for higher costs. And that serves no one.
