Intellectual Property and Outsourcing

Filed under: Products @ Indus — Mukul Gupta at 12:23 pm on Thursday, August 3, 2006

Being worried about your intellectual property while outsourcing your project makes a lot of sense. After all, this is what you are paying to get developed, right?  So let’s first understand what exactly IP covers:

  • Patents i.e. Inventions registered with government which will prevent anyone else from manufacturing or marketing it
  • Trademarks i.e. Name, Phrase, Sounds and Symbols which distinguishes your product and services
  • Copyrights i.e. Expressions of ideas but not the idea itself
  • Trade Secret i.e. Any formula, pattern, device or compilation of data that gives your company an advantage over competitors is a trade secret

Let’s examine how your intellectual property can come under attack:

Immoral Employees

Employees who is working on your project might not stay with the company forever. Once they are gone, they can sell the property or use (read as “reuse”) it in the next organization.

Immoral Companies

The vendor may themselves feel welcomed to use the work for their own benefit i.e. launches a competing product at lower price.

Act of Theft

A hack or theft of vendor’s servers or storage devices may make everything available to the entire world.

How do we protect your IP?

1. Signed Agreement with your organization

We sign an agreement with your organization that grants you full, exclusive and irrevocable rights to the IP. This agreement is only subject to one clause i.e. there should not be any outstanding money against your account.

2. Signed Agreement with Employees

Each employee at Indus signs an agreement which basically ensures that any work product at Indus cannot be used outside our organization. In case of a breach of such agreement, we can proceed immediately with legal action.

3. Secured Infrastructure

Indus employs fulltime in-house system administrators who ensure that our staging servers both in USA and India are monitored 24/7 for its usage. The servers are also physically secured.

Thus, go ahead and outsource in peace!

In Pursuit of Creativity

Filed under: Offshore outsourcing, HRD — Mukul Gupta at 10:40 am on Wednesday, August 2, 2006

Creativity - The Holy Grail

All organizations relentlessly pursue creativity. To some its a matter of making minor improvements while for others, it is a matter of survival. Without creative people your organization will rot and die.

When we talk about creativity - we generally tend to refer to thinking, reacting, discussing and solving a problem in imaginative ways.

Creative people are characterized by:

  • Flexibility i.e.  They are quick to see the problems from others perspective
  • Fluidity i.e. They can generate a lot of ideas about a given problem or scenario
  • Positive Orientation i.e. They do not get lost in arguments and focus on problems
  • Risk Taking i.e. They do not mind challenging the status-quo

Above all, there is one more characteristic which people simply tend to ignore and that is ”Knowledge”

Knowledge over Subject or Topic

People who do not have knowledge over their discipline or area of work are not creative! They are guys who are just guessing the answer and are throwing 100 darts in the dark with a hope that atleast one of them hits the board.

Will you call a child who painted a “green colored sun” as creative? Hardly! I will call it lack of knowledge. Give this child a task to design a space craft and I bet, the results will be very creative!! Similarly, bringing such a child to solve management problems is not promoting creativity but a wastage of time.

Regardless of the popular opinion, creativity has to be knowledge driven. Knowledge that is acquired by years of hard work or education and reading. It’s not possible to have expert knowledge in all areas thus; it is not possible to be creative in all areas.

Creativity is subject or topic focused and not generic in nature! Without knowledge even fools may sounds creative. But, you don’t want fools to work for you now, do you?

Custom business directory website developed by Script2Please.com

Filed under: Portfolio — souvit at 6:02 pm on Tuesday, August 1, 2006

Hello Friends,

We recently built a classified business listing site with a difference for one of our client.

The aim of the site is to provide information and detailed listing of businesses in the Leicester and Leicestershire area. Each business has a page to themselves with full details of their products, services and testimonials that their customers have left for them.

It saves time for the visitor in searching for a specific business in his locality. Additionally he need not visit all the sites as the businesses listed are having individual pages to themselves where a lot of priliminary information is available. Thus they can do an initial scanning / shortlisting on the website itself.

On the other hand, it is a good value for the businesses who are advertising on this website as they get targetted, active buyers and get additional exposure on a third party website giving them more credibility.

The site management functions are fully automated through an easy to use password protected administrative panel.

Potential Advertisers should click on the Business Benefits link to learn how to promote business online

Beware of copycats

Filed under: News @ Indus — Abhishek Rungta at 4:43 pm on Tuesday, August 1, 2006

Hello Friends,

I founded Indus Net Technologies in 1997 with goal to reach out and serve small and medium sized businesses globally by fulfilling their internet service needs and empowering them to be competitive and profitable.

We innovated and diversified at a blazing speed to provide several successful service brands targetted towards the small and medium sized enterprises. These brands offered unmatched value for money and therefore attracked thousands of business owners who entrusted their business with us.

Inspired by our success, several copy-cat sites are mushrooming everywhere. Though we believe that imitation is the best form of flattery, we have no choice but to take stern actions (including lawsuit) against these copycats.

Most of these companies have copied our sites word-to-word. In fact some of them are lazy enough to leave our name / phone number on their sites! I was just wondering how someone can stoop so low.

Anyways, they can copy our site copy, but they cannot copy the quality, committment, technical knowledge, experience and infrastructure support that we consistently deliver to our clients.
By copying the content, they are not only committing a crime under Copyright Act, but also misguiding consumers who want to order the original service offered by an Indus Net Technologies service brand.

It is very important that you, as a consumer, make proper enquiries about these companies before you give them your business. Most of them are fly-by-night operators and their infrastructure related claims are hollow and spineless. Do verify them before you trust them with your valuable business.

If you are in doubt about any particular brand and want to confirm its association with  Indus Net Technologies, please feel free to send an email to talash@talash.net.

If you are already dealing with any such organization, feel free to contact us to verify the truth, which you can yourself make out with the evidences we have.

See us LIVE! on our office IP Cam

Filed under: Offshore outsourcing, News @ Indus, Photo Gallery — Abhishek Rungta at 2:15 pm on Tuesday, August 1, 2006

Hello Friends,

We have installed an IP Cam so that you can see us LIVE at work during our office hours!

Check us at http://61.11.120.42:1050/

Login: viewer
Passowrd: viewer

You will see maximum activity during day time IST (which is 5:30 HRS ahead of GMT) on a wordday. It also operates during night shift but we do not have much work going on at that time.

The IP Cam shows images from one of our web development center i.e. Mod 636. We are in process of installing IP Cams in all other development centers to give you a real time LIVE view of Indus Net Technologies workplace at all the times.

This is just another way to be more transparent to our customers, prospects, vendors and partners.

And yes, I hope this demarcates us from several copycats who copies our website content to show off that they have the same team and infrastructure as we have, but actually operate from a dorm room!

Take care!

Productivity Differences

Filed under: Offshore outsourcing — Mukul Gupta at 10:57 am on Tuesday, August 1, 2006

I get the same questions all the time -

“How’s a Senior Programmer better?”

Although the most obvious answer to this is “A senior programmer is more experienced” but, this is not what I see in my mind when I try to imagine looking at a Senior Programmer and Junior Programmer working on the same project simultaneously.

The reason I recommend to go for senior programmers is: Better Productivity

What is Productivity?

Productivity is generally defined as output produced divided by Inputs used i.e.

Productivity = Output / Input

Here Output is the actual work done i.e. results produced while Input refers to all things that a programmer required to do the task which includes the amount of time you had to spend to micromanage things.

Thus you can better productivity if:

  • A Programmer produces same output by using lesser number of inputs
  • A Programmer produces more output by using same number inputs
  • A Programmer produces more output by using lesser inputs

So, a productive programmer is the one who takes lesser amount of time and inputs from you. Thus, if one your “must haves” is not to micromanage the programmer then it is always better to hire a senior programmer.

At Indus, any productive programmer is a senior programmer. Thus, the fact that a senior programmer has more experience is just coincidental.
